Moonlight for Miracles 2011

Moonlight for Miracles, a fundraiser for the Dana Farber Hospital in Weymouth, Ma pulled off another fantastic night raising over 1/2 million dollars in one evening. Jen Kelly again brought together artists to raise money for alternative treatments, such as acupuncture and massage at the hospital. Diane Scott, Pam Copeman, Fran Andahazy and Bonnie Hobbs as well as Jen Kelly all had beautiful original work on display. My painting "Repose Study" brought in over $2000 for evening! Bebe Neuwirth sang All that Jazz from Chicago and totally mesmerized the room! Billy Costa was the auctioneer and you couldn't help but give all of your money towards his offerings! Tim Wakefield also showed up. All together it was a very memorable evening. Sultans of Swing kept the dance floor full with their powerful music!

Saturday, July 30. 2011 the New England Plein Air Painters got together for their annual show, this year held at the South Shore Art Center's satellite show at the Shipyard Gallery in beautiful Hingham, Ma. Sergio Roffo, Ted Charron, Stapleton Kearns and Robert Duffy are preparing to board our water taxi to take us to Grape and Bumpkin Islands where we will split up and paint our paintings for the Wet Paint Auction held later in the day.

South Shore Arts Festival 56th Annual Arts Festival

Thanks to wonderful hosts Jenn and Rob Willms at the Dine Around Event I sold this painting of the back yard view from their house! Lobster bisque and grilled steaks and chicken were masterfully cooked and the company of many neighbors made the night so much fun!

This was the South Shore Art Center's 56th Annual Arts Festival Father's Day weekend. The weather held out for a really successful weekend.

This year I went to Braintree and Weymouth High Schools to consult with the students to build a mural about their towns. The students were surprisingly confident with their ideas and I basically tried to cheer them on and encourage a life of art. Thank you to the South Shore Art Center and all of their wonderful staff and volunteers for making this a great weekend!

Hingham, MA- Summer in New England celebrates light dancing on the water and painters gathering where the land meets the sea. The South Shore Art Center welcomes award winning landscape artists, the New England Plein Air Painters in a special exhibition Paint the South Shore at the Shipyard Gallery, 18 Shipyard Drive, Hinham, Ma 02043. Each year, New England Plein Air Painters gather at a picturesque location, create exceptional landscapes, enjoy friendship and camaraderie, hold afresh paint event and display the year's top creations. The event at Shipyard Gallery promises to attract nautical art collectors and water sport enthusiasts.

New Work

I haven't written anything on my blog for a while, so I thought I would add my new work and talk a little about what inspired me. Since Christmas, I have been mostly in the studio working on a commission and trying to replenish my inventory.
"Out to Pasture" was a scene that moved me while I was at the Shaker village in Hancock, Ma earlier this year. Years ago I remember seeing a painting by David Curtis, who was one of my mentors growing up, and this painting stayed in my memory till this day. I remembered a sloping hill, a large tree with sheep under it. I wanted my painting to provoke the same feeling that I felt looking at that piece. I have a sloping hill with a majestic tree and cows leasurely dining on the grass. I like that the painting has a foreground and a distance. This was one of those days with perfect temperature and light. I hope you feel what I felt when you look at this painting.

Feed the Hungry! November 30, 2010

Interfaith Social Services as of today raised $1,000,000 for the FEED THE HUNGRY campaign. They have provided almost 1/2 million pounds of food to help people in need of assistance. I was a tiny part in that number by doing a portrait demo to show people what they were bidding for in a live auction for one of my portraits.
Judy Manning brought her beautiful goddaughter Katie to sit while I painted her in front of the huge crowd at Lombardos in Randolph.
We must give thanks to all the angels who worked so hard to so much for the needy!

Presentation of a Commemorative Portrait of the Honorable David G. Nagle First Justice of the Brockton District Court

The Judge Nagle Portrait Committee and the Plymouth County Bar Association recently presented a Commemorative Portrait in honor of his long career as First Justice of the Brockton District Court by Dianne Panarelli Miller.

Kevin P. Creedon, Clerk-Magistrate was the Master of Ceremonies. The Honorable Paul C. Dawley, the Honorable Lynda M. Connolly, Jack M. Atwood, Esquire, Kevin Reddington, Esquire, and Judge Nagle's son David G. Nagle Jr, Esquire were speakers at this memorable event.

Friday October 22 the Marriot Hotel in Quincy hosted it's annual fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Jen Kelly brought a few artists together to donate their work. Bonnie Hobbs, Diane Scott, Pam Copeman, Kelly and myself had work there. My paintings brought in $1000! This is a really fancy affair with many celebraties showing up. It is always so much fun! The Sultans of Swing were on hand to keep everyone on the dance floor.

The Festival of the Arts at the La Salette Shrine

During the weekend of September 26, 2010 Dianne joined 12 noted artists to begin a 3 day art filled weekend at the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, Ma.
The artists John Caggiano, T.A. Charron, Robert Duffy, Paul Goodnow, Mike Graves, Barbara Lussier, Christopher Magadini, Margaret McWethy, Tony Nyzio, Catherine Raynes, and Eric Tobin and myself began with a beautiful exhibition of our work. During the 3 days we all were found on the grounds painting in this beautiful and spiritual place.
Each day, a few of the artist took turns presenting a 2 hour demo. I painted Father Pat, a well known singing priest who has a few albums out. If you go to www.http://aacs15.com/?q=node%2F2114%2Fplay, you can see my demo as well as the others.
After painting in the demo, I was asked by some of the people there to paint their portraits. I gladly agreed and did 5 more paintings that day!!!

My painting "Blue" was accepted to the National Art Encounter in Naples, Fl. I was really excited to have my painting accepted to a National show, but to have a life drawing was even better. They are my favorite subjects to paint, but I don't have many places that like to show them.
My happiness was multiplied when my friend Christine said she had a house there and invited me to stay during the show. We planned on doing many paintings while there.
We flew down on short notice without any problems and landed in very hot conditions. The heat effected our entire trip making it almost impossible to paint outdoors for long.
I managed to get in 5 paintings in 6 days. Quite a feat in 95 degree weather with almost 80% humidity!!!!
I did get many beautiful photos in and hope to get a large painting from it. I was forced to actually relax for most of the week which I realized that I really needed, especially before all my classes start the next week.
We flew home with no problems or delays finishing a really wonderful week in a very beautiful land!

New York, New York!

My good friend Sandra treated me to a first class visit to New York's wonders.

Following a first class seat on the Acela, we arrived at the Carlyle Hotel around 11am, where JFK and Jackie O stayed and one of the last places where there are elevator operators still in service, only to whisk off to the Spanish Historical Society to view the magical murals of Sorolla. If you have never seen these murals, you must! They are spectacular! In one of the murals, I found a girl in the painting that could be Kacie. I was blown away by how much it looks exactly like her.

From there we visited the Frisk Museum. If I wasn't intoxicated enough from the murals, then the Vermeers and Titans I saw at this beautiful mansion completed the high. This wonderful man collected so many masterpieces for his home and generously left them for the rest of the world to see. What a day.

We reluctantly left to return to our beautiful hotel and had dinner in their 5 star restaurant. I started with a lobster bisque and had the best sirloin steak of my life with truffle potatoes and spinach. Aaahh.

The next day, we headed to the Met and spent 11 hours of heaven there. If you have never been there, you know that we didn't see everything that day. We enjoyed lunch and another wonderful dinner inside the museum. Seeing everything after dark was a magical experience. My favorite place was the Visual Storage area where you could see the master pieces up close behind glass. Sargents and Winslows and Hassams oh my!!!! You can imagine how tired we were when we got back!
Saturday we headed back to the Met. It was much more crowded that day. We left there to go to the Guggenheim. We both felt nauseous from the spiraling room and slanted floors. We didn't stay there long. I appreciated some of the work there, but I don't think I will go back there!

We then went into the Whitney, but was not impressed with the work there so moved onto the Carnegie home which houses a design museum. It had a green exhibit there. Not much art, but very interesting.

We were not looking forward to our 4 hour trip home, but managed to have a really fun ride home.

It is not a trip I will soon forget!!!

Nahant Historical Society's Garden Party

Dianne was invited to this special event to raise funds for the Nahant Historical Society on July 25, 2010. Norman Laliberte was an exceptional host and donated his own special pieces.

Many wonderful artists including my good friend Carolyn Jundzilo, Tom Sutherland, Bill Cloutman and many others were asked to come and paint the beautiful landscapes that Nahant has to offer. Their names will be added to the Historical Society's roaster of impressive artists that have painted in this beautiful town.

Although it was an incredibly hot day, many paintings were sold making this a very successful event.

New Happenings

Today my friend Jen Kelly joined me to bring paintings to the Rockport Art Association. We then visited John Caggiano in his studio and enjoyed looking at all of his great work. After a fantastic lunch of fresh fish, I gave Jen a tour of all my old haunts when I lived in Gloucester including Lane's Cove and Annisqaum. We ended up at the North Shore Art Association and did a painting there after being inspired by the wonderful work hanging there. Afterwards we headed to Bass Rocks and got a nice sunset scene in joined by John after he got all of his other work done. The weather was stunning and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. We were just gettting into our paintings when Ed Begley Jr walked up to us and started chatting. He was a really nice guy and seeing a celebrity was just the icing on the cake of a really great day!

New England Arts for Animals

March 18th was the opening for the New England Arts for Animals exhibit of paintings of animals juried in to this show housed next to the Cold Water Creek in the Derby Shops in Hingham. People may come in and vote for their favorite paintings till the end of the month and the popular votes will appear in a calendar to raise money for this group. The opening was well attended and the guests enjoyed a harpist and a beautiful array of food. A raffle for gifts could also be bid on. It was a wonderful time given by hosts Jill and Don.

I will let you know if any of my pieces were chosen. It is a tough choice with many wonderful paintings and photos to choose from!

High Street Antiques

I just reconnected with an old friend from high school who just took over an quaint antique store in Ipswich not too far from the famous Clam Box restaurant. My friend Donato and his wife are hoping to continue the high traffic and thought that adding my artwork to his shop would help that happen.

I thought that the paintings looked great where he hung them and he assured me that he has many "new" antique gems that he will be displaying along with them. I can't wait to see the room when it is finished. I am sure with his enthusiasm and taste, it will be a success! He almost sold one piece the very same hour we hung it! Wish us both luck!!!

During February vacation, I painted in Jeffersonville, Vermont with 3 New England Plein Air Painters to prepare for our show at the Bryan Memorial Gallery in May. Barbara Lussier, Bob Duffy and William Hanson were fierce artists painting outdoors in 20 degree weather. When I walked into the rented house, the front room was filled with gorgeous paintings done by these wonderful artists. It was inspiring. The view from this house was spectacular and made it into 4 of my paintings! They were just finishing lunch when I showed up and we went out to paint not long after. I got 2 in that day. Three the next and 2 more before I left on Monday. It was a great time and I look forward to seeing what the others managed to do in this area.

Portrait Sketches at the South Street Gallery

Saturday December 19th South Street Gallery held another portrait event in their wonderful gallery. I painted along with Jane Flavell Collins and Vcevy Strekalovsky. Vcevy did pencil sketchs, Jane did pastel and charcoal and I did oils. We made a great team and had a very busy day with people coming in all day. I painted a total of eight portraits between 11 - 4pm.

Most of these portraits were painted within a 1/2 hour so they are just sketches and not formal portraits. You could have them framed at the gallery. These made wonderful Christmas presents for loved ones.

The pencil portait is of Jane by Vcevy, and the charcoal is by Jane. Great job guys!

I would love to do more of these!

77th Annual Moonlight and Miracles

I was lucky to join fellow artists Jen Kelly, who put this event together, Diane Scott, Vincent Crotty and Karl Nestleberger at the Marriot Hotel in Quincy for the 77th Annual Moonlight and Miracles Gala to raise funds for cancer awareness. Jen had prints of our work made into cards to sell for this wonderful event. Tim Wakefield of the Red Sox and Lisa Hughes of WBZ News were the celebrities on hand to support the South Shore Hospital. Jerry Bennett and the Sultans of Swing was the band and they were incredible. The whole place was rocking! What a great time!

Art Exhibition in Abington

Sean Flood (www.seanfloodart.com) welcomed me to join his friends in an exhibition that included a great jazz band in her home town of Abington.

Friends from all over came to see this ecclectic group of artists. This was something you think you would find in the city yet it was less than 2 miles from my house on the fourth floor of an old warehouse. I sold my painting "Springtime at the Trinity". This was a great way to spend my birthday!!!

Got-Art? Opening Night

Thursday night was the opening for a wonderful show in Holliston, Ma by Got-Art? I was greeted by gallery director Julie Jenkins and her amazing energy in a wonderful historical barn lit up like a christmas tree. Many people came out to see the show with quite a few of them leaving with art in hand from this 4 day show.
I was really impressed with a young artist named Sean Flood who painted some great large cityscapes. Turns out he has a studio in Abington! Now how come I never heard of him before the show. I can't wait to see the work he produces as he matures!
There was food and music and great art to be had! I really enjoyed myself and felt grateful to had been invited to such an eclectic show

The Berkshires

I visited the Berkshires with my friend Sandra Pollock to paint and see the local museums. On our trip there, we decided to stop at the Hancock Shaker Village. I had never been there and was really impressed by the beauty there. The weather was perfect with big puffy clouds in the sky.

We spent the whole afternoon there and took many pictures. The light was incredible!

The next day, we found a beautiful natural wonder at the Natural Bridge State Park in North Adams. America's only white marble dam. The water carved the natural bridge and formed these beautiful formations in the rocks. Many names from years ago were carved into many of these!

After lunch, we visited the Clark Museum where many Homers, Sargents and Bouguereaus were. I was so impressed by the beauty and quality of their paintings. We stayed mesmerized for about 4 hours. I would definately go back. The Williams Art Center hosted a Prendergast exhibit. We made it there just in time to see it. I am not a watercolor person, but I loved his body of work.

The next day we got a painting in from the road behind our hotel. We decided to head home after that and try to find another painting spot. We made it to Historic Deerfield and decided to head home after that.

It was a really great week.

Plymouth Stroll

Sunday was Plymouth's Stroll. Art galleries and artists were strutting their stuff. I painted outside Class Arts and Antiques where I display a lot of my work. I painted with Bob Beaulieu and Mareen Brookfield. The weather was fantastic and we had a really great day.

Our hope was to bring attention to this new wonderful gallery. I sold a painting that day and one last week there. Please visit them if you are in the area.

The Marshfield Fair 09

We did our annual trek to the Marshfield Fair on Thursday.

The weather was cool and we had a great time. By the time we arrived home, we were completely exhausted.

Our favorite event was the demo derby where we each pick our favorite car to win. My cars made the top 3 in every race.

Things have been crazy busy!!! After painting in Rhode Island for the opening of the Lily Pad, I headed down to Chatham to paint plein air for the week. I left for the Cape early Monday morning and painted till Weds. evening. Thursday I went back down and delivered my work. That evening, the Hearle Gallery had a lovely function for the artists participating in the show opening Saturday. It was great to see a lot of my artist buddies there.

The Guild of Boston Artists

The Guild of Boston Artist had it's opening for the annual New England Representational Painting Competition. Dianne's painting "The Rock" 120 x 30, oil was included in this impressive roster of artwork. the "New England Representational Painting Competition" is a regional, juried exhibition featuring the best of representational painting by both emergin and established artists living in New England.

It was fun to see my mentor Robert Douglas Hunter along with his wife Elizabeth and meeting for the first time his daughter Kate, who had a painting in the show as well.

Wollaston Beach at Sunset

Both Kacie and Glenn were home with a stomach bug, so I headed to beautiful Wollaston Beach and painted two canvases. I sold the first one off the easel. That warmed me up to paint the second one, this beautiful sunset. Sunsets are difficult to paint because it changes so quickly. You basically have 10 minutes before it is gone.

"Alla Prima" Portrait

This is a quick portrait I did of my cousin's daughter Kym, from Quebec, who has been living with us. She sat pretty well for a 13 year old. I am happy with the result and she will have a nice souvenir of her stay with us! The picture with Kym in it was taken the next day, so her hair is a little bit different.

Susan Powell Plein Air Painting Event

I left my house very early in the am to paint in Madison, CT for Susan Powell Fine Art's Plein Air Event. I found a beach before 9 am and made myself very happy there. My first painting didn't go so well....the tide went out very quickly. That only warmed me up for my next painting. I am quite happy with how it went. By the time I got home, I was extremely tired. Especially since I painted all day in Boston the day before!!!

Painting Beacon Hill

It was the perfect day to head into Boston and paint on the Charles River. Not too much wind and not too hot. Because they are repairing the bridge, I didn't get to stand in my favorite place, but I am happy with what I have.

New Hampshire Vacation 09

We were lucky and had a great week of weather with only a little rain. Forgot my Alizarin Crimson but managed 5 paintings all week. It was really great to get away!

We spent the first day in North Conway. After we saw this beautiful view, we went to Diana's Bath. The water was really flowing and was really freezing!

Braintree's 4th Celebration

My family took our annual trek to Braintree to enjoy the 4th of July Celebration with our new roomie, my cousin's daughter Kim from Quebec. We love to be outside in the evening while trying to see how many of our old classmates we can still recognize. The rain forced the fireworks to the next evening and made for double the fun! Oceanside 17 is located in Hull, Massachusetts, on Boston's south shore approximately 30 miles from Boston, accessible by Boat from Rowes Wharf in Boston and by train to Nantasket Junction with bus service to Hull. Driving DIrections Take Route 3 to exit 15 (Hingham). Pass Derby Street Shops and turn left at light onto Cushing Street. Cushing street is a curvy residential road. At blinking light bear right. At stop sign turn left onto route 228 North. Follow signs for 228 crossing over route 3A. Continue on 228 North, this road will take you directly into Hull. At first sight of the ocean you will see the Nantasket Beach Hotel on your left. Take a left onto Rockland House Road right before the Hotel. Go up slight hill and Oceanside 17 Studio & Gallery is at bottom of the Hill on left at 17 Rockland Circle.
